Navy

NAS Pensacola is the Naval Air Station located in Pensacola.  The history of the Naval Air Station dates back to the 16th century when a Spanish explorer founded a colony near where Ft. Barrancas is located.  Construction of the “Pensacola Navy Yard” began in April 1826 and became one of the best equipped naval stations in the country.  In 1862 when New Orleans was captured by the Union forces, Confederate troops, retreated from the Navy yard and was reduced to rubble.  Later, work began to rebuild the base but in 1906 many of the structures were destroyed during the hurricane and tidal wave.  Construction again began later and as time went on it expanded more and more and became more important during World War II.  Pilot training has been one of the main instruction at the Naval Air Station and in 1971, NAS was chosen as the headquarters site for the new command which combined direction and control of all Navy education and training.  Today Pensacola NAS employs more than 16,000 military and 7,400 civilian personnel.
